Laundry Adventures and My First Giveaway

For the first two years in my apartment my frugal adventures included washing all of my laundry by hand in a 5 gallon bucket and a toilet plunger (no worries, this toilet plunger was ONLY used for washing clothes with) during this time I used a lot of liquid fabric softener because everything was thrown on the back of chairs or on the laundry rack in my kitchen to dry.

One day it dawned on me that even if I was saving lots of money on the cost of going to the Laundromat I maybe was doing myself a disservice when it came to just how clean my clothes were. Especially things that take the most damage with everyday wear, if you know what I mean. So, one day I decided to go ahead and take a load of my favorite outfits to the Laundromat and see if they felt cleaner when I was done. I threw the load in and lifted the lid of the washer when everything got going very well and stared in horror at the inky blackness that greeted me! I resolved then and there that I'd rather be spending my money on going to the Laundromat and having clean clothes on my body. But, the rub is, it is still expensive to go to the Laundromat and I didn't really like the idea of spending all that money. Truth be told at home I was creative when it came to soap for washing clothes. The last remnants of dish detergent or shampoo got filled with water, shaken up and dumped in to wash the clothes, and I'm pretty sure this practice is frowned upon in the Laundromat. So, getting actual laundry detergent and fabric softener is a big deal to me. Fabric softener sheets is really cheaper than liquid laundry detergent, but to get the fresh smell of liquid I had to toss in 3 or 4 sheets in the dryer to get that yummy smell. Not really saving there.

As far as laundry detergent, I've been lucky to find good deals on it through freebie hunting and CVS (that store is awesome if you know how to work it!) But, then this opportunity came along for me to try this Purex fabric softener sheets and since they claim to have 3 times more scent to them I figured it would be a good thing for me to try out.

It's a shame that pictures are so limited with what they can share. The first day I got my package I showed off the prize to everyone I knew then promptly dumped it in my bedroom and forgot about it. Or so I thought. The whole next week I was forever stopping to wonder about how wonderful my room smelled and trying to figure out what it was! Ha! Turns out the scent from this Purex stuff does keep going on forever!

I then grabbed the box on my trip to the Laundromat and used it on 2 loads of clothes. I wish I had not let my impatience to get out of the Laundromat get the best of me (I'm not good with crowds and the local Laundromat tends to be packed). If I had waited I think the smell would have infused into my clothes better. As it was I literally waited until the clothes were barely dry and rushed out as fast as I could. I will do better next time.

So, I've tried these Purex fabric softener dryer sheets and I'm impressed. I hope that I'll be able to use these for quite awhile before they run out! Although I can vouch that they reduce static cling and repel lint I don't have pets so I can't really say much about repelling pet hair. My fave capri's have cat hair on them from my boyfriend's niece's house, but I have lugged them into the Laundromat yet to try that out. I'd love to hear from my readers of their experience in that regard. To that end I'm hosting my very first giveaway on this blog.

I'm so very excited about this, because I've never done this before and as long as this is a site about my frugal adventures I should share frugalness with you all as well. I'm using Rafflecopter for this giveaway and the prize is a coupon for one free box of Purex fabric softener sheets. I'm excited to know what you think. Signing up will be rather simple for my first giveaway because I don't have a whole lot of loyal followers yet. If all goes well I will be having more in the future, hopefully!
