Book Review: The Promise Box

'The Promise Box' by: Tricia Goyer. There were many things I enjoyed about this book. The story line was a beautiful story of unexpected love. The plot of well written, taking two people with similar problems in life and lifting them to a place they could face their past. The imagery was well articulated... I felt like I was actually there!

That being said, this book was also I huge disappointment to me. The whole premise for this book is that it is about Amish life, but if you are reading this book as a fun way to learn about the Amish, I suggest you look elsewhere.

The author mixed up the Amish religion and Mennonite religion throughout the whole book. I assume this is possibly done because of the personal faith of the author and the publisher and their own faith based ideals... but Amish is more of a works based religion. And the Amish and Mennonite are actually not closely enough related of religions to swap aspects back and forth in one story.

Some blatant mistake I found were: Public displays of affection between baptized members of the church (something even Mennonites don't condone), Ownership and use of a cellphone without consequences, Use of a 3rd grade Mennonite textbook for an 8th grade Amish student.

As I said, the story was very enjoyable and if you aren't picky about how realistic your literature is then this is a very good read.

Disclaimer: I received my copy of this book from book sneeze to read over and give my review on. My reviews will always be my own thoughts on this blog.
